Who's online
Who's online right now?
An empty chat room is the worst kind, so here you look before you speak. These are some of the people who chat on Tochato; the live list inside changes by the minute and can be narrowed to a single country.
Every card in the list opens a profile. From there you can follow the person, send a message or start a video call, which is how a list of names turns into a conversation with someone you actually chose.
Why chat here
Good conversations start with two people
No Form to Fill In
Open the page and you're in. A guest session is ready before you have finished reading this line, so there is no email to confirm and no password to invent.
Meet People Worldwide
Strangers from different countries, cultures and time zones share one list. Typed messages can be translated automatically, which makes a language gap smaller than it looks.
Chat When You're Awake
Morning coffee or 2 a.m., the list shows who is around at that moment. Busy hours come and go, and you can always look for yourself before you start.
Follow the Ones You Liked
Liked talking to someone? Follow them. Their profile keeps a message box and a call button, so a good conversation does not have to be a one-off.
What is an online chatroom on Tochato?
It is a one-to-one chat: you and one other person. Classic online chatrooms put dozens of names in a scrolling lobby and hoped a conversation would break out. Tochato keeps the part people liked about a chatroom (strangers, real time, no appointment) and drops the crowd. Each chat is its own private chat room: just the two of you, nobody talking over you.
So when we say chat rooms here, we mean 1 on 1 chat rooms. There is no lobby to wait in and no menu of themed rooms. You either let the site pair you with a stranger at random, or you look through who's online and open a chat with a person you picked. That is all there is to it: two people, and a fresh start whenever a conversation has run its course.
If you expected a wall of nicknames, give the smaller version one try. A 1v1 chat room is quieter, and it is much harder to be ignored in.
Why a private chat room beats a crowded one
Because in a room for two, somebody is actually listening. A crowded room looks lively, yet most of what gets typed there scrolls past unanswered. In a 1 on 1 chatroom your first hello lands in front of one person who has nothing else to read. The old chat rooms with private chat worked the same way in the end, since the good conversations always moved to a side window. We start you in the side window.
| A crowded room | A room for two | |
|---|---|---|
| Who reads your message | Everybody scrolling past, or nobody at all | The one person you are talking to |
| How a conversation starts | You post a line into the lobby and wait | You are matched, or you open a chat with someone you chose |
| When it is quiet | You stare at an empty room and leave | You check who's online before you say a word |
| Getting a word in | Ten threads tangle into one feed | One thread, at your own pace |
| Going private | Find someone first, then ask to move to a private chat | Private is where you begin |
| Finding them again | Hope they come back to the same room | Follow them and message from their profile |
None of this makes big rooms bad. Some people like to lurk in a busy feed, and Tochato has no shared lobby to offer them. If you are trying to work out which kinds of chat rooms still have people in them, that question has a page of its own.

Tonight, somewhere
Tonight, somewhere, someone is awake
Late-night talks, quick hellos between time zones, a running joke with a person you met ten minutes ago. Chatting is fun when it is this simple: you want to talk, somebody else does too, and for a while the two of you have the room to yourselves.

Can you chat online with people from other countries?
Yes. The who's-online list can be narrowed to one country, so you can chat online with people in the United States tonight and with someone on another continent tomorrow. Random matches are not tied to where you live either, which means the stranger on the other side may be a few time zones away and just starting a day you are finishing.
A different language does not have to stop you. Typed messages can be translated automatically, so two people without a shared language can still keep a conversation moving. To browse by country, see chat rooms by country; Americans, and anyone who wants to talk to them, have their own page for USA chat rooms.
Text, video, or both?
Both, in the same chat. A random match opens as a 1 on 1 live chat on camera, and there is a message box for typing. Some people talk, some type, plenty do a bit of each. If you would rather not start on camera with a stranger, open a profile from Who's online and send a message first.
A profile gives you three things to do: follow the person, write to them, or start a video call with them directly. Following matters more than it sounds. Online chatting with strangers has always had one flaw, which is that a good online chat ends and the person disappears. A follow keeps them in your list, so the next conversation does not depend on luck.
Is it really free?
It is free to start, and we would rather say that plainly than promise more. New visitors get free matches. The Reward Center at the top of the match screen hands out more of them several times a day. After that, a new match runs on coins, and so does a call that goes on past its free time. Plenty of sites call themselves free chat rooms and leave that last sentence out; we put it on the home page. The page on what's free and where it stops goes through it line by line.
A few simple rules keep it friendly
Good chat rooms work because people look out for each other, and that holds when the room has only two chairs. Be respectful, keep your address, phone number and passwords to yourself, and remember there is a real person on the other side of the screen. If someone makes you uncomfortable, leave; you never owe a stranger more of your evening.
Block and report sit in the menu on a person's profile, and using them is not rude. The short guide to safe chat rooms covers what to share, what to hold back, and what a scam tends to look like.

FAQ
Questions, answered
What is Tochato?
Tochato is an online chat room site where chat happens one to one. You are paired with one stranger for a private chat, or you open the list of who's online and pick someone yourself. It runs in a browser, asks for no sign-up, and is free to start.
Are there online chatrooms that still have people in them?
Yes, though fewer of the old lobby kind. The online chatrooms that stay busy now are small and live: one-on-one matches and lists of people who are on at this minute. Tochato shows you who is online before you start, so you can check that someone is there before you say hello.
Can I talk to the same person again?
Yes, if you follow them. A follow keeps the person in your list, and their profile has a message box and a video call button, so the next conversation does not depend on luck.
Is there a private chat room?
Every chat on Tochato is a private chat room. Only you and the person you are talking to are in it. You do not have to ask anyone to go private first.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Tochato runs in the phone's browser with nothing to install, and you can add it to your home screen. The same site works on a laptop.
Can I choose which country the other person is from?
In Who's online, yes: the list can be narrowed to one country. A random match cannot be set to a country beforehand.
Where can I chat online with people right now?
Right on this page. Tap Start Chatting to be matched, or open Who's online to chat online with people you have picked from the list. Either way you begin as a guest, with no account to create first.
Is chatting here actually fun, or will nobody answer me?
Chatting is fun when someone answers, and that is the part we built around. You see who is online before you start, each chat has one other person paying attention, and when a conversation runs flat you can move on to a new match.
Do I need to sign up?
No. A guest session starts when the page loads, so there is no email, no password and no profile to complete before your first chat. An account only becomes useful later, when you have followed people or have messages you want to keep.
Are the chat rooms free?
They are free to start. New visitors receive free matches, and the Reward Center at the top of the match screen gives out more several times a day. When those are used, a new match costs coins, and so does a call that runs past its free time. The free chat rooms page explains where the line is.
Can I see who is online before I start?
Yes. Who's online is a live list of people on the site at that moment, and you can narrow it to one country. Tap a card to open the profile, then follow, message or start a video call from there.
Is there a live 1 on 1 chat?
Yes. A random match opens as a 1 on 1 live chat on camera, with a message box for typing. You can keep to text, talk on video, or mix the two.
