Chat Rooms by Country

One list, many countries. Narrow who's online to the place you are curious about, open a chat for two, and let typed messages be translated when you do not share a language.

How do I chat with someone from a specific country?

Open Who's online, choose the country and tap a profile. From there you can message, video call or follow the person.

Which countries can you chat with?

Any country that has someone online at the moment you look. Tochato is not divided into national sites; everyone shares one list, and that list can be narrowed to a single country. So international chat rooms here are not separate rooms with flags on the door. They are the same room for two, opened with a person from the place you chose.

The United States has a page of its own: USA chat rooms covers the four American time zones and what people there like to talk about. The United Kingdom and Canada each have a section further down this page. For everywhere else, the country setting inside Who's online is the directory.

How does chatting by country work?

You filter a list; you do not join a room. It takes three taps.

  1. 01

    Open Who's online

The live list shows people who are on the site now. You see it as a guest, without an account.

  2. 02

    Choose a country

Narrow the list to one country. What remains is the people from there who are on the site now.

  3. 03

    Open a profile

Tap a card, then send a message, start a video call or follow the person for later.

Random matches work differently: they pair you with someone who is online, wherever that person is, and the country cannot be set beforehand. Random chat rooms explains that route.

What if the two of you have no language in common?

Type, and let the translation help. Text messages on Tochato can be translated automatically, so you can write in your own language and the other person reads theirs. It is the feature that makes it realistic to chat with people around the world instead of only with those who happen to speak English.

A few habits make translated conversation go better. Write short, complete sentences. Avoid slang and jokes that depend on wordplay, at least at first, because those are what machine translation mangles. If a reply looks odd, assume the translation slipped before you assume rudeness, and rephrase.

On a video call, translation covers what is typed, not what is spoken. You can mix the two: smile and wave on camera, and type the parts that need precision.

What time is it over there?

Usually the wrong time, unless you plan for it. People are most often free in their own evening, so the trick is knowing when your free hour overlaps with theirs. This table converts 9 p.m. in five places. It is a clock conversion only, and daylight saving shifts some rows by an hour or two during the year.

When it is 9 p.m. where you are

Rule of thumb: Europe and the Americas overlap in the European evening. Australia overlaps with the American evening during the Australian daytime.

UK chat rooms: when is Britain awake?

Great Britain runs on a single time zone, GMT in winter and BST, one hour ahead, in summer, which makes its chat rooms easier to plan around than North America's. A British evening lines up with the American afternoon and with the morning after in Australia.

British humour is dry, self-mocking and fond of understatement. A few phrases are worth knowing so you do not misread them.

British phrases that confuse visitors
You hearIt means
"You alright?"Hello. It is not a question about your health
"Cheers"Thanks, or goodbye, or both
"I'm knackered"I am very tired
"Not bad"Good, possibly very good
"Fancy a chat?"Would you like to talk?

There are no separate British chat rooms to enter. Set the country to the United Kingdom in Who's online and you will see who is on.

Canadian chat rooms: how long is a Canadian evening?

Canada stretches across six time zones, from Pacific time in Vancouver to Newfoundland, which sits half an hour ahead of its Atlantic neighbours. A Canadian evening therefore lasts a long while: it starts in the Atlantic provinces and is still going hours later on the Pacific coast.

It is also a two-language country. Most of Canada chats in English; Quebec largely in French. If you land in a conversation with a French speaker, typed messages can be translated, and a "bonjour" is appreciated either way.

To see who is on from there, set the country to Canada in Who's online. There is one setting for the whole country, so Vancouver and Halifax share a list.

How do you keep in touch past one chat?

Follow the person. Time zones make chance reunions unlikely: the stranger you enjoyed talking to at your midnight will be asleep at your lunchtime. A follow keeps them in your list, and from their profile you can send a message, or start a video call when your hours overlap again.

It helps to agree on a time before you part. "Same time tomorrow?" settles in one line what would otherwise take a week of missed moments.

What if nobody from that country is online?

Then it is probably the middle of their night, and you have three sensible options. The first is to change the hour instead of the country: use the table above to find their evening and look again then. The second is to widen the search. Neighbouring countries often share a language and a time zone, so someone from next door may suit you just as well.

The third is to plan ahead. When you do meet someone from the place you were looking for, follow them before the chat ends. A short list of followed people from a country is worth more than a filter.

Which manners travel well?

Questions travel better than opinions. Ask about someone's country instead of telling them what you have heard about it, leave politics and religion until you know each other, and do not remark on accents or slips in English: they are speaking your language, which is more than you are doing in theirs. A different country does not make a stranger more or less trustworthy, so the guide to safe chat rooms applies in every time zone.

Where should you start?

With a country you know. If the whole world feels like too wide a choice, begin with a place you have visited or always wanted to. Cost is the same whichever country you pick: free to start, and the page on free chat rooms has the detail. Americans and those curious about them can go straight to the USA page. If the site itself is new to you, how Tochato works takes two minutes.

FAQ

Questions about chatting by country

Are there international chat rooms?

Yes, in a one-on-one form: people from many countries share one who's-online list, and you can narrow it to a single country before opening a chat.

Can I chat with people around the world?

Yes. You can chat with people around the world either by taking a random match, which pairs you with someone who is online, or by choosing a country in Who's online. Typed messages can be translated automatically.

Are there chat rooms in the UK?

There are no separate chat rooms for the UK, but you can set the country to the United Kingdom in Who's online and chat one on one with people who are on in Britain.

Is it free to chat with people in the UK or Canada?

It is free to start, the same as for every country. The free chat rooms page shows where coins come in.

Which countries have the most people online?

It depends on the hour. We do not publish figures, but a country's own evening is the likeliest time to find people from there. Open Who's online and switch between countries to see for yourself.

Can I chat with someone in Australia from the US?

Yes. Set the country to Australia in Who's online. The hours that overlap best are the American evening, which is the Australian daytime of the next day.

Does choosing a country cost anything?

No. Looking through Who's online and narrowing it to a country is free. A match or a call follows the usual rules for free matches and coins.

Can I pick a country to chat with?

Yes, in Who's online. The list can be narrowed to one country. Random matches cannot be limited to a country in advance.

Do messages get translated?

Typed messages can be translated automatically, so two people without a common language can still talk. Speech on a video call is not translated.
