How do I find people in the USA to chat with?

Open Who's online, choose the United States and tap a profile. From there you can message, video call or follow the person.

Who's online in the USA right now?

Open Who's online and set the country to the United States, and you have your answer on screen. The list shows people whose country is set to the United States and who are on the site at this moment, each with a photo and a name. That is what USA chat rooms look like on Tochato: not a lobby with a flag on it, but a list of people you can open a one-on-one chat with. The page on chat rooms by country shows the three taps it takes.

Each card leads to a profile. From there you can follow the person, send a message or start a video call. If you would rather not choose, a random match may pair you with someone in the States too, though random matching does not let you fix the USA or any other country in advance.

When are American chat rooms busiest?

In the evening, local time, as with most things people do for fun. The catch is that an American evening is four different evenings. When it is 8 p.m. in New York it is still 5 p.m. in Los Angeles, so the American evening never arrives all at once; it rolls from east to west.

We do not publish traffic figures, so treat this table as a clock conversion and nothing more. It shows what "evening" means in each zone, lined up against Eastern time and against London for visitors from abroad.

A US evening (8 p.m. to midnight) in each time zone
Time zoneCoversSame hours in EasternSame hours in London
Eastern (ET)New York, Florida, Georgia, Ohio8 p.m. – midnight1 a.m. – 5 a.m.
Central (CT)Texas, Illinois, Louisiana, Minnesota9 p.m. – 1 a.m.2 a.m. – 6 a.m.

Pacific (PT)California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada11 p.m. – 3 a.m.4 a.m. – 8 a.m.

Read across, not down: a night owl on the East Coast and someone just home from work on the West Coast are online at the same moment.

Not in the States? How do you chat online with people there?

You do not need to live there. You might want to talk to someone in America from somewhere else: to practise English, because you are planning a trip, or simply out of curiosity about a country you know from films. The country setting works the same wherever you are.

Timing is the main thing to get right. Use the table above backwards: if you are in Europe, your early morning is the American late evening, and your late evening is their afternoon, when fewer people are free. From Asia or Australia, your daytime lines up with their night.

Do not worry too much about your English. Typed messages can be translated automatically, so you can write in your own language and be understood, and people are generally patient with someone making the effort. Say where you are from early on; it is the easiest opener there is.

What is America talking about this month?

Whatever is on the calendar. The United States has a strong shared rhythm to its year, and knowing where you are in it hands you a first question that almost anyone there can answer. This is a rough guide, not a rule.

The American year in small talk
Time of yearWhat comes upAn easy question
January – FebruaryWinter weather, the football final"Are you watching the game, or just the adverts?"
March – AprilCollege basketball, spring break, tax season"Did your bracket survive?"
May – JuneGraduations, the first barbecue of the year"Any plans for the long weekend?"
July – AugustIndependence Day, road trips, the heat"Fireworks or staying in?"
September – OctoberBack to school, football again, Halloween"What is the costume this year?"
November – DecemberThanksgiving, the winter holidays"Who does the cooking in your family?"

What trips up visitors from other countries?

Small conventions, mostly, and none of them serious. Knowing a handful saves a few confused moments.

  • "How are you?" is a greeting. The expected answer is "Good, you?" and not a report on your health.
  • Temperatures are in Fahrenheit. If someone says it is 90 outside, they mean hot, not lethal.
  • Dates go month first. 3/4 is the fourth of March.
  • Distances are in miles and time is on a 12-hour clock. "See you at 8" needs an a.m. or p.m.
  • Friendliness is quick and sincere, and it is not a promise. A warm first chat is normal manners there.
  • State matters more than country. People tend to say where they are from by state or city, and they enjoy being asked about it.

What do people in US chat rooms talk about?

The same things they talk about at a bar with a stranger, minus the noise. In US chat rooms a first conversation usually opens with where you are, what you do and what you are watching, and it goes wherever those lead.

  • Where they are. "Which state?" is a safe first question, and nearly everyone has an opinion about their own.
  • Sports, by season. Football in autumn, basketball and hockey through winter, baseball all summer. You do not need to know the rules; asking who they root for is enough.
  • Weather. A country that has snow in one corner and a heatwave in another on the same day never runs out of this.
  • Food. Regional barbecue, pizza loyalties, what counts as a proper breakfast.
  • Work and weekends. What they do, and what they would rather be doing.

What changes between the East Coast, the West Coast and the South?

The words. American English changes by region, and spotting it is half the fun. None of this is a rule, just a few things that come up often enough to recognise.

Regional words you may hear
RegionYou might hearIt means
The South"y'all", "fixing to""all of you", "about to"
New England"wicked" as in "wicked cold""very"
New York City"the city", "on line"Manhattan, "in a queue"
Midwest"pop", "ope!"a soft drink, "oops, excuse me"
West Coast"hella", "the 405""very", a motorway named with "the"

The list has no city setting, so there are no NYC chat rooms or rooms for any one city. You find New Yorkers the old way: ask.

Do US chat rooms need registration?

Not here. On Tochato you can browse the United States list and start a chat as a guest, with no email and no password. The page on chat rooms with no registration explains what a guest can do and when an account becomes useful.

It is also free to start. The details are on the page about what's free, so they are not repeated here.

Looking for another country?

The United States is one entry in a longer list. To pick somewhere else, or to see how time zones line up across the UK, Canada and Australia, go to chat rooms by country. New to the site altogether? How Tochato works is a two-minute read.

FAQ

USA chat room questions

Are there still chat rooms in the USA?

Yes, though the busy ones are no longer big lobbies. On Tochato you set the country to the United States and see who is online, then open a one-on-one chat with a person from the list.

Where can I chat online in the USA?

From any browser. Open Tochato, tap See Who's Online and choose the United States to see who is on the site now. No download or account is needed to start.

Can I find people from one US state?

Not with a setting. The list goes down to country level, with no state or city below it, so set the country to the United States and ask. People usually say where they are early on.

What is the best time to find people in US chat rooms?

Evenings in the American time zones. Because the country spans four zones, the evening begins on the East Coast and keeps moving west until it is late night on the Pacific coast.

Are there free chat rooms with no registration in the USA?

Yes. You enter as a guest, receive free matches as a new visitor, and can browse the United States list without an account.

Can I chat online with America if I live abroad?

Yes. Anyone can set the country to the United States. From Europe, try your early morning; from Asia or Australia, try your daytime. Typed messages can be translated automatically.

What should I talk about with someone from the US?

Start with where they are and what is on the calendar. The month-by-month table on this page gives an easy question for each part of the year.

Are there NYC chat rooms?

Not as a separate room. Tochato lets you narrow the list by country, not by city, so there are no dedicated NYC chat rooms. Pick the United States and ask people where they are; New Yorkers tend to mention it early.

Is the USA chat free?

It is free to start. Looking through the list is free, and new visitors get free matches. The free chat rooms page says where coins come in.

Does it work on a phone?

Tochato runs in the browser: there is nothing to install, and you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app.
