Chat Sites: The 10 Kinds and How to Choose

Rankings go stale in months. The kinds of chat site barely change. Here are all ten, what each asks of you, a seven-point checklist for judging any of them in five minutes, and how this site does on it.

How do I choose between chat sites?

Decide the kind first: a crowd to hang out in, people you already know, or one new person to talk to. Then check that the site shows who is online and lets you try before registering.

What are the main kinds of chat sites?

There are ten, and almost every one you will ever land on belongs to one of them: general lobbies, topic rooms, random text chat, random video chat, one-on-one sites with a who's-online list, messengers, community servers, dating chat, forums with a chat box, and listening services. Once you can name the kind, you know within a minute whether a site is for you.

That is why this page does not rank brands. A ranked list names brands, and brands come and go; a good share of those lists are also written by whoever paid to be number one. The kinds change far more slowly, and they tell you what you actually want to know: how you will meet people there, what it asks of you first, and whether anyone will answer.

What do the ten kinds look like side by side?

Like this. Read the "Sign-up" column first if you are in a hurry, and the "Suits" column first if you are not sure what you want.

Most other labels are one of these ten under another name. "Live" and "random" sites are kinds 3 to 5; "social" and "public" ones are kinds 1 and 2; "without registration" usually means random or one-on-one.

Which kind is the most popular right now?

By sheer numbers, messengers and community servers, because that is where people talk to those they already know. For meeting strangers, the picture is different: the formats that pair you with one person have held up, while open lobbies have thinned out.

For talking to new people, then, the honest answer is a kind, not a name: one-on-one sites, with or without video. We are not going to invent a league table to go with that. A site earns the word popular by having someone there when you arrive, and you can test that yourself in less time than it takes to read a ranking.

Famous and busy are not the same thing, either; a site can live for years on a name it made long ago.

How do you judge a chat site in five minutes?

With seven checks. A site that passes all of them is worth your evening; one that fails two or more is not, whatever list it appears on. None of them needs an account, which is rather the point.

  • Can you see people? Look for proof that someone is online now: a live list or fresh timestamps. A bare counter proves little.
  • How short is the way in? Count the screens between arriving and saying hello. Every form is a place to give up.
  • Is the price stated before you are invested? If anything costs money, the site should say where and when in plain words.
  • Does it work on your phone? In the browser, without forcing an install.
  • Where are block and report? They should be easy to find on every conversation or profile.
  • Are the rules readable? Short guidelines, a privacy policy in plain language and a contact address that exists.
  • Can you keep in touch? Following or saving a contact, so a good chat is not lost when the window closes.

The fifth check is the short version of a longer subject. The guide to safe chat rooms covers the rest.

How does Tochato do on its own checklist?

It would be odd to publish a checklist and not run it on ourselves. Here is each check with what you will find on this site, including the places where the answer is "partly".

The seven checks applied to Tochato
CheckOn TochatoThe catch
Can you see people?Who's online is a live list, open before you start a chatIt shows who is on now, which at a quiet hour is fewer people
How short is the way in?You arrive as a guest; no form before the first chatA guest session is tied to one browser
Is the price stated?Free to start, then coins; the free and coins pages set it outWe do not print amounts, because they change
Does it work on a phone? It runs in the browser and can be added to the home screenThere is no store app, if that is what you prefer
Where are block and report? In the menu on a person's profileThey are tools; the judgement is still yours
Are the rules readable?Community guidelines, terms and a privacy policy, plus one support addressSupport is by email only
Can you keep in touch?Follow a person, then message or video call from their profileNothing brings back a person you did not follow

Where does Tochato sit among the ten?

Kind five. Tochato is a one-on-one site with a who's-online list: you can take a random match, or you can look at the people on the site right now and choose. Chats can be typed, on video, or both, and a call is between you and one other person.

It needs no account to begin, which puts it among the chat rooms with no registration. That combination is the reason the home page describes it as a chat room for two, and how Tochato works shows the visit step by step.

Which kinds are not for you?

Ruling kinds out is quicker than choosing one. A few honest pointers:

  • If you want a crowd to disappear into, skip the one-on-one kinds, including us.
  • If you want to stay in touch with people you know, a messenger does it better than anything on this page.
  • If you want a relationship and care about filters, a dating service is the right tool.
  • If you want to talk about one niche hobby, a topic room or community server will have the vocabulary.
  • If you want a real conversation with someone new in the next two minutes, the one-on-one kinds are built for exactly that.

What do people get wrong when they choose?

Mostly they judge the wrong thing. Four mistakes come up again and again, and each has a quick fix.

Trusting the member count

A figure for registered members says how many people signed up since the site opened, not how many are there tonight. Look for who is online now.

Testing at the wrong hour

Almost every site is quiet on a weekday morning. Try once in the evening before you write a place off, and once in the daytime before you fall for it.

Registering first, looking second

If you hand over an email at five sites to compare them, you have five new senders in your inbox. Compare the ones that let you look first, and register only where you stay.

Choosing the kind by habit

People who grew up on lobbies look for lobbies, even when what they miss is a conversation. Ask what you want from tonight, a crowd or one person, and pick the kind that serves it.

A crowd or one person?

That last question decides more than any feature list. A group site gives you a place to belong, and it needs a crowd before it is any fun; a one-on-one site gives you a person to talk to, and it may take a couple of tries before you click with someone. The home page sets the two side by side, and the guide to popular chat rooms describes what the busy version of each feels like.

Still deciding?

Try one kind tonight instead of reading about all ten. The checks above take five minutes on any site, ours included. For people in the United States, USA chat rooms shows who is online there.

FAQ

Chat site questions

What are the top chat sites?

They are better described by kind than by name: general lobbies, topic rooms, random text and video chat, one-on-one sites with a who's-online list, messengers, community servers, dating chat, forums and listening services. Pick the kind first, then run the seven checks on any site you try.

What are the top 10 chat sites?

Published top 10 lists change constantly and are often paid for. A sturdier ten is the ten kinds in the table on this page, because the kinds stay the same while brand names come and go.

What is the most popular chat site?

For talking to people you know, messengers are the most used. For meeting strangers, one-on-one sites are the popular choice, since each chat starts with someone on the other end. No single brand holds the title for long.

Is there a good group chat website?

Yes, among general lobbies, topic rooms and community servers. Tochato is a different kind: chat here happens one to one. Choose a group site if you want a crowd, and a one-on-one site if you want a conversation.

Which chat sites work without an account?

Mostly the random and one-on-one kinds, because they have no member list to guard. Lobbies often ask for a nickname only. Messengers, community servers and dating services nearly always want an account. Tochato starts you as a guest.

Which chat sites show who is online?

Lobbies show a list of names, though many of those are idle. One-on-one sites with a who's-online list show people you can open a chat with. On Tochato that list is open before you start, and it can be narrowed to one country.

Are chat sites free?

Many are free to join and charge later, through ads, subscriptions or credits. Check where free stops before you invest time. Tochato is free to start and uses coins beyond that; the free chat rooms page shows the line.

Which chat site is best for shy people?

A one-on-one kind, usually. A call is just you and one other person, and you can begin by typing instead of speaking. On a site with a who's-online list you can also choose the person and send a message first, which is gentler than a cold video call.
